The big idea is to integrate science into math incorporating a real world problem that we have in our school. Students are not aware that the food that they don't eat at breakfast or lunch and is left untouched is tossed into the garbage. Since my students lack motivation to learn Math because they don't see the benefits of it and because they think it is boring, I want to use this situation to motivate them to work cooperatively on a problem that is close to them and needs a solution. I want my students to actively apply math concepts to practical problems such as how many calories does a person need everyday, or how to read food labels to better make food choices, or how to determine the number of servings per student.
Once my students understand how important is to eat a balanced meal and how other people don't have the food that they have, we can work together to discuss possible solutions to the problem. My pictures represent hopelessness and hope for a better future. I used power point presentation but I incorporated a tool called mask image that gives the picture the look of a tridimensional shape, making the picture more dramatic. I-Image |

I-VIDEO
I wanted to make a video that visually appeals to all audiences. I tried to catch the audience’s attention by incorporating elements that were familiar to people’s everyday life such as their favorite foods. I innocently intended to bring back memories of enjoying eating something they like . I make the audience understand that though it is their choice when they pick their food, at the same time I helped them recognize the need to change their nutritional habits. By giving them information about nutritional facts, labels and prices, I was convincing my audience to use their math knowledge to be able to make better choices when buying, cooking and eating food. My point was to show how behind what we eat, there is math learning awaiting for us.
The tools that I used to make my video were google slides. Once I finalized, I converted this presentation into video mode using Screencast O'Matic. I used Incompetech website to download music to use as a background. Finally, I used a movie-maker tool to incorporate all the elements into the video.
Pro-Tips:
1- Muted the microphone when recording music only.
