Imagine IT: Spring Update I
My project has moved very slowly. I haven’t been able to do many activities, but I keep searching and picking some ideas to fit in when the time is right to incorporate them into the project. Since my project has to do with making my students aware of the importance of good food choices and healthy habits, before I incorporate math into this project I had to build their background knowledge and information by uncovering some myths and misunderstandings that kids have at their age. So, we had some discussions using articles such as “Hunger in America”, “Food for Life”, and “Junk food” taken from a program called Achieve 3000. My students have been learning how to identify and interpret cause/effect and problem and solution structures using passages that help them understand more about nutrition and its role in their lives, as well as understanding why it is important to have good nutrition. At the same time, my students have been gaining math skills to be able to solve problems involving fractions, decimals, percentages, reading charts and converting measurements so they can apply what they have learned to develop this project. They brainstorm ideas and discuss different types of foods; discuss what kind of foods are healthy and which ones are unhealthy. Then, they elaborate a list of all the possible effects of eating “junk food” and then decide they want to do some research based on what they picked. Among those research topics were obesity, diabetes, cavities, stroke, high blood pressure and heart attack. They voted on making google slides with animation to present their findings and to have an oral presentation/ discussion with their classmates. Since my students have special needs, time is what we need to do a good project. I don’t want to rush them to finish a project without the tools they need to be successful. Little by little, my students are moving forward with the project.
