The big idea is to integrate science into math incorporating a real world problem that we have in our school. Students are not aware that the food that they don't eat at breakfast or lunch and is left untouched is tossed into the garbage. Since my students lack motivation to learn Math because they don't see the benefits of it and because they think it is boring, I want to use this situation to motivate them to work cooperatively on a problem that is close to them and needs a solution. I want my students to actively apply math concepts to practical problems such as how many calories does a person need everyday, or how to read food labels to better make food choices, or how to determine the number of servings per student.
Once my students understand how important is to eat a balanced meal and how other people don't have the food that they have, we can work together to discuss possible solutions to the problem. My pictures represent hopeless and hope for a better future. I used power point presentation but I incorporated a tool called mask image that gives the picture the look of a tridimensional shape, making the picture more dramatic. |
